Hi guys,

I was participating in Melbourne Audition So You Think You Can Dance

People in Sydney, be ready - when you come to audition, they'll ask you to sign some paper forms. Please read a fine print. Channel 10 will ask your permission to use your images wherever they want. Do not be surprise to see yourself one day somewhere and somehow, as well as parts of your body. For Channel 10, all material is for free. Also, be ready to be asked to express cheerful emotions and to welcome judges like they were Hollywood stars. SEVERAL TIMES until TV will be satisfied with your face expressions.

After we signed forms with fine print, the limo with 3 judges arrived and Channel 10 asked us to welcome judges three times in the morning. All were in the row, and it was a long time – volunteer work for TV. In the afternoon, Natalie BAssinghtwaighte was delivering her speech about 20 times because she could not read it properly from the first time. People were asked to cheer up and express emotions all the time. It was annoying. Also, it was about 30 degrees outside, and all dancers were tired of waiting and hot weather.

In the morning, three announced judges said hello to public and gone.

The judge was only one guy who is just SIMPLE TV PRODUCER. He could not judge dance because he is not right person to do it. It looks if you can do some gymnastics, for him it looks like cool dance.

Guys , do Tricks !!!! – it was said to us !!!! Like we were monkey. Gymnastics and dance are different things. If they want gymnastics, they should organize the competition “The best Australian Gymnast”.

Many another people were sitting in the competition room and enjoying competition together with this producer. Might be, he used his authority to invite his friends to have fun. That’s probably a very nice when somebody is trying to dance in front of you, and you like a God can say Yes or No. Not explaining reasons and not explaining what right do you have to judge. After that, you can discuss details, how awful was that girl, how fat this , and so on. Interesting, isn’t it?

PEOPLE, ASK THIS PRODUCER WHICH CERTIFICATES / CREDENTIALS HE HAS and why he was appointed to judge dancers. What is the reason to judge? ASK HIM WHEN IN FRONT OF THE JUDJES!!!! ASK JUDGES TO JUDGE YOU !!!! That ‘s your right! They are paid to do this job.

Also, Ballroom people do not be surprised if you will have hip-hop music for your hot salsa, etc. In Melbourne, no any professional ballroom dancers participated. As well as other style professional dancers participated. Only amateurs. The show is not about dance. It is a reality show which is looking for YOUNG, good-looking, stupid and easy manageable people, who can not ask questions.

People who are after 30 - do not waste your time. They read the forms with age first, and I saw my age in BIG RED CIRCLE which was something like sign "TOO OLD FOR THIS SHOW". THey will not even see your dance if you are after 30 or something like that. All people say that I look at 25 maximum but they READ FORMS FIRST. The age is important. They put your age in red circle if it is not young enough.

THey want crowds of stupid people who believe that Channel 10 is looking for the Best Dancer. They are looking for people who are good material for dance show.

If you have no brains, not thinking about your career, if you are young and you have hopes that your career will improve after this show - go!

If you CAN DANCE and think about your career, better find a good contract.

Also, Please remember that you will not be the Best Australian Dancer. All best are in Ballet Professional Companies! If you win this title, it is fake one! If you go to professionals after that, you will be broken there. Nobody will help you, they just will say – If you are the best, let’s see what you can do. And you will not be able to compete with the dancers who are not participating in this show because they have contracts.

Also, remember how Nigel L. said about one girl that "she was dancing as a CORPSE’S BRIDE". (who was the corpse ? Dmitry? What the wonderful help in career for that girl !!! Nygel's wife probably imagines that she is also like Goddness.

Natalie BAssinghtwaighte is a good-looking girl but it looks she is too far from Cat Deeley. She is just good looking.

So, rating probably will drop because of

- Bad organizations - problem that this producer is allowed to judge. Why he was appointed to judge the first auditions? All other organization will be also crap, probably.

- NO good dancers. All professionals have ignored this event. I saw only amateurs. ONLY. NO ONE PRO !

- AMERICAN JUDGE. If she will be always nice and polite, the show will be boring. If she will be like her previous husband, people in Australia will hate her.

-The host will not be able to compete with Cat Deeley

TV was very annoying. People came in the morning; people were welcoming judges and working for show. Dancers wanted to concentrate, to have some rehearsals, to talk to each other. The goals of dancers and TV were different. These TV people were doing their show, and dancers were just free material used to create something from nothing.

So do not be shy – ask the producer why he is only one judge? Who is he ? Ask his Dance credentials. What right to judge does he have?

In reply to anonymous,
Wow you must be a very disgruntled person, obviously you didn't do as well as you thought you would.
I also was at the auditions ( not Melbourne) and all I can say is ppl go for it you don't have to be a professional with a contract to be a great dancer!' The whole idea of the show is to find a great dancer in their style that can show the judges they have what it takes to be versatile. eg: Could a top professional Ballet dancer be able to crump, maybe maybe not, But could a non professional dancer be able to crump maybe maybe not, so they are on a level playing field. I saw some great dancers in their own field that went straight through to Sydney, they did have that extra something the other dancers didn't have and the audience saw it and so did the judges.
On the American show Benji Wasn't the best dancer over the whole of America but he was versatile with whatever style was thrown at him. That is what the show is about.
There were professional dancers at the audition I was at, you can't tell me you know every professional dancer of every style over Australia, So that was a non significant comment.

So Everyone else left that wants to audition Go For It!!!!!! don't let one disgruntled person put doubt in your mind that you are not good enough You may just have that x factor they are looking for.

Remember its not just the best dancer it is also your favorite dancer that may win.
Not all professional dancer are liked by the community so give other ppl a go, anonymous.

YOU WROTE : "The whole idea of the show is to find a great dancer in their style that can show the judges they have what it takes to be versatile"

First of all, To JUDGES ! NOT TO A PRODUCER from Channel 10 who has not right to judge. If he has, he should announce in fair manner why he is chosen to cut 60-80 % of participants.

great dancers are not participating in this show. I do not know why. Maybe, they are not interested. Maybe, busy. No idea.

YOU WROTE " great dancer in their style"
You are right ! Dancers should show their styles. Why brilliant ballroom dancers should do crumping ? Crumping is just ugliest thing from all these street staff. Dancers who can dance ballet / jazz/ contemporary / flamenko/ latino/ ballroom do not need to crump like ugly and sick crows. If a dancer can fly and jump why should he/she crump. That 's the destiny for "dancers" who can not do anything else.

Versatility is just a liitle bit here , a little bit there - nothing in general. Some styles can not be mixed

Of course, go to show. It is fun but do not think it is about dancing.
IT IS JUST A REALITY SHOW.

Also, any gymnast can do staff like acrobatic hip-hop but much better.

Guys in Sydney
Demand to be judged by judges ! Do not agree to be judged by a one single producer

You will have more chances, in this case. It will be honest

YOY ALSO WROTE "Wow you must be a very disgruntled person, obviously you didn't do as well as you thought you would."

I think here it is not important how good you are. If you are not young enough for the show, the producer will mark your ankette and that is it.

I am very happy in general as I have everything I want in my life. I was participating in this event just because I saw the second American season and I t was not bad, The third season was already more reality show.

anyway, nobody is writing about this event . Why?
I wrote . so you can use this info.

I think it is you who are disgruntled person . Probably you are crumping too much. Go to a good ballet / jazz school, and everything will be nice and beautiful about you.

Anonymous, You don't have to do Ballet to feel beautiful about yourself. There are many other styles of dance other than ballet and those people feel good about themselves because they are able to express there emotion through any style of dance.
How boring would the world be if only Ballet can make you feel beautiful and good about yourself.

I only used crump as an example because maybe that could be one of the challengesyou may have to dance.

Yes it is a reality show, I agree, but stop downing people for wanting to give this a go.
Stop saying dancers that get on this show are not great and you use the word STUPID PEOPLE alot.

Ballet can be beautiful but also very boring. You are trying to say if your not doing Ballet you can't dance.

Well you are wrong, There are many trained and skilled dancers out there doing many styles that are just as beautiful and more exciting than Ballet.

Re: being over 30 forget about it,, Hhaha you know nothing, you are presuming that from just auditioning in 1 state. I know of quite a few over 30's that are going to Sydney and omg they are professional dancers. But then again they mustn't be great as you said because they don't do Ballet.

There are many forums on this subject if you look but I can understand why People aren't using this one. It is because of negative people like you that think only Ballet produces great dancers, which is a very shallow Statement.

I mentioned many styles. "Dancers who can dance ballet / jazz/ contemporary / flamenko/ latino/ ballroom....", I wrote. I do not know why you are upset about ballet only. Also, all negative emotions are only in your letters. Read my letters and try to find some neg. emotions. I wrote about facts only. I have done it for people. If u have info - it is easier to survive. Let's put aside discussions about styles -it is forever. Just what I want people to know - How it was there... and what they should anticipate.

"Stupid" - yes, I used that word but in positive sense (DO NOT BE STUPID GUYS! BE CLEVER !!!) . I think, it is really stupid not to ask who is the judge is. People should get up early in the morning and to spend all day long. What for? To loose the whole day in order to be judged by some TV staff member ? I agree that probably somebody think it is very clever, but I am sure some guys do not like such fakes in "professional" and honest competitions.

Before every audition, it is more clever to find out the info first. Pros do exactly that. Just imagine - if you have Sat rehearsals in your dance company or u could go to this auditions ? u need to choose between. And discipline in dance companies is tough very often. Also, the day can be spent somehow else if there are some other good alternatives.

As you could see from my notes, I said - go to auditions, and use the information in your favour. Be ready to be judged by the only one guy - Producer. Do not have any illusions. Or ask judges to judge you. This will be honest and valid rules for dance competition. Isn't it?

You can 't judge if you have no necessary experience / skills / diplomas, etc. That is the point !
WHO ARE THE JUDGES?! - it is the question. Show credentials! Proove your right to judge! To sit at the table and make a pose - THAT "S NOT ENOUGH !

This show does not look professional because the judge is not professional dancer /choreographer.
If a TV guy does it, it is not professional dance competition anymore, it is professional TV staff.

Good Luck, Guys in Sydney ! Yes try to do your best!
But keep your energy for competition. If you are asked to cheer up twenty times because the host Natalis can not repeat the text, just say to tChannel Ten "Let's Natalie have trainings first , and when she can repeat her text without mistakes, we will go outside and show our emotions. Once or twice."

When you see backs of judges (when they are going to leave you)., ask this Producer one nice question -
"DO YOU THINK YOU CAN JUDGE ????!!!!!"

YOU need to re read what you wrote.
You wrote some very negative things about other dancers.
You mention Ballet alot. About contracts. About only Professional dancers are great dancers.
I only responded to what you wrote.
When it comes to show biz even top actors have to do their lines over and over again until they get it right. So that is not important. At the 2nd audition the judges were introduced and the competitors were given some very useful advice by them as to what they are looking for, what not to do and what to do to make your dance better than the person before you.
I agree with you about the 45 seconds in front of the producer of the show. He is no judge but
It is obvious it is his show and so you have to impress him to get to the real dance judges. He knows what he wants for the show then leaves it up to the other judges to be the critics.
It is the same with idol, the first round is done in front of the producer and then they go in front of the 3 judges.

Yes, it is absolutely true if to talk about techniques, for example. Technically, ballet is the most difficult dance style.

If to talk about likes/ dislikes, I think Nygel Lythgue did not think much about using the word "THE BEST". If the organizers were using "The FAVOURITE Australian Dancer", it would be more suitable, for this show because the public is choosing their favourite dancer.

In Olympic Games, "the best" is suitable. It should be fine rules. If there are no any rules, the Favourite is better. More honest. People like this dancer, they choose him or her, without any rules.

For example, "Idol" is suitable for singing competition in my opinion. .

"The Best" DAncer is too much. This title will not help to a Winner, it will be the Winner's curse.

Just imagine, Sabra will go to a professional company. Expectations will be very high, and nobody will help to her. Why? Because If you are called the Best, please show us that you are better then all dancers in the group. And if not? What happen then? Injuries will happen because Sabra (the Best American Dancer) is not prepared to dance profesionally. All dancers there were trained from 4 -6 years ols, and she started 4 years ago. Her feet will be broken, do u understand this? Wht good for her? She is not the Best. She is just favourite. If she would have Title "Faviourite among AMATEURS" (which is true) she could count on better career, I believe. In TV shows/ films, as the previous winner does, by the way...He has not come to show in Las Vegas, he have choosen TV career. Clever guy.

If you won TV Title, continie to be on TV. It starte dwith TV, it should be TV after that. WHere is professional dance career here

The title of the show is "So You Think You Can Dance" Not So You Think Your The Best Dancer"
Its testing peoples versatility in different styles and to see who is the best at that.
I think the show will be interesting to see, say a Ballet dancer try hiphop or cha cha or tango, it will be an interesting challenge for the dancers to try other styles and see how they adapt. That is what the show is looking for.

There are many competition dancers that auditioned in their own style and some are ranked as number 1 in Australia. For these people this show is a bit of fun for them and to see if they can handle the challenge of new styles. So don't say they are not great dancers because they are in their own style.

Oh and by the way, there are many amatuer dancers in some styles that are better than the professionals.
The difference is 1 competes as an amatuer who gains titles so they then compete overseas. The Professionals CHOOSE to dance as professionals and there prize is money.

That is in 1 partiular style of dance. So not all professionals are better than amatuers

I checked the web-site
They are using "Favourite", not "The best"

In this case, it is OK.
Favourite dancer among amateurs - that is fine.

Natalie says in introduction: "We are looking for best and hottest dancers in Australia!" Everything is right here, but the real emphasis is on the word "hottest". What exactly does it mean to be hottest, nobody knows. Maybe, it is an elusive "X-factor", maybe, age and attractiveness, maybe it is an ability to allow others to laugh at you.

I actually agree with phrase saying that "You may just have that x factor they are looking for. Remember its not just the best dancer it is also your favorite dancer that may win."

Problem here is that many people think that this is a real dance competition, with real career opportunities. It is not the case with this TV show. Hottest can win, be liked by the public, but would never be able to become real professional dancer. But he/she anyway can capitalize on the popularity in other ways, especially in America.

So, this show is good for people who want to get popular in general, using dance as a medium (or pretext, to be more precise). An ability to dance well, and an ability to look hot on TV are loosely correlated.

Comment by anonymous 2

October 30th 2007 04:28
So what was your reson for auditioning again? because I can't quite remember.

People aren't entering this thinking they are going to be able to dance in a professional dance company. People who are more grounded and not living in a fantasy world like you auditioned for other reasons. Yes one of those will be to get on tv, nothing wrong with that.
Prize money, why not go for that. Be a back up dancer to a band, nothing wrong with that. So what if the puplic think your hot, guy or girl. AND I don't think the public will laugh at the top 20 dancing, they may laugh with them, but you know I can see you laughing at them.

So there are really serious people like yourself that think this is a competition for finding the best dancer. when there is a whole lot more. so lighten up in life it will be a fun show so don't take everything so seriously.

Of course, have fun if you have nothing to do.
Better go and do something for Channel 10 than to drink beer, etc. Of course, go, but remember to ask the producer what's his criteria of selection.

If this competition was announced, ask TV guy to announce the rules as well. IF YOU DO NOT KNOW RULES how can you satisfy this producer ?

Ask him what does it mean to be the best and hottest for him ? Different people understand different things for this definition.

Guys do not be shy! ask judges and the producer something which will help you to understand what you should do in order to be in top 20.

THey were talking about tricks. Ask which exactly tricks are good for the producer? Only he knows what looks hot on TV. Ask when limousin have come and judges have come. While they are in front of you they have no chance to disclose it. Ask who is the producer, which dance credentials does he have to judge. If they said this is a dance competition let;s provide approapriate judges. Full stop.

some producers can understand 'hottest' as 'ready to do something hot personally for producers or his friends' . all knows how actors & actresses in hollywood do theirs careers

for anonymous,

i just found out 2 very close friends, one who is a swing dancer, the other is hip hop, made it through to Sydney!!

They are not the best technical dancers, but the have a passion and love for what they do, and that is evident when they dance!!

Would you rather watch someone who is good at what they do.. but shows no emotion and enjoyment from it, or someone who is obviously having fun and loving what they are doing...

Although ballet, classical and contemp provide great technical training, that is actually not the be all of dancing...

Your claim about "hot" being the main purpose for getting you through the show is not well supported, with a lot of the dancers through, not fitting the stereotypical "hot" look...

Diversity is also key, for most people, watching 20 classical dancers attempt hip hop or latin or even swing could be quite painful... So in saying that all the best dancers are in ballet companies, may only in fact apply to the best classical dancers...

I will assume you have never watched many other styles, or do not understand the stamina, strength, discipline and hard work that these styles require...

So although you may not be happy with your personal outcome, maybe you should step back and be happy for those who made it through based on talent, passion and a love for what they are doing...

Everyone should be congratulated for having a go, and i think we should be happy for the opportunity, when else does dance get such good coverage and exposure....

Finally, maybe think about what you would be writing if you did make it through... probably the opposite to what you have commented.....

just food for thought..

Gee Willikers, I don't mean to be rude, but it may sound like it. All I read was Pick Pick pick....I didn't read too much positive stuff, actually I got sick of reading all the negative stuff I just skimmed through the threads after a while. My daughter has been dancing since she was a tiny tot, and no I'm not a stage mother. I tried to hold her back a bit as I didn't think there was a permanent career in dancing. But try and stop her, no way. She said to me once, "Mum, ask me to stop dancing and you may as well as ask me to stop breathing".
Anyway, she auditioned for the show and had an absolute ball. She got a call back but didn't get any further. Some of her freinds did and she was so excited and happy for them, but was she grumpy or picky, nup, she loved it all.

It's not about being 'picked' to her, it's just all about dancing, that's all. She has a full time career in the dance profession, not dancing. She takes 5 dance classes a week, she has danced for professional companies here and overseas. She was classically and Jazz trained when young. Then did full time dance after High School.. She takes Classical, Tap, Jazz, and Pole classes each week at night after work and on Sundays, and works 6 days a week....

And her Attitude... nothing short of amazing.. Not just I her mother thinks that, she never picks or criticises, she dances for the LOVE of dance, not the acclimation. And that, I think, got her many professional overseas and local dance shows, and being able to dance well too helped lots..lol.. She's not the best and definately not the worst, But one thing she does have that I haven't come across in many dancers is her magical attitude. She lives to Dance with all her heart and soul. DANCE from your SOUL.. Not bitch or whinge, you loose the beauty of Dance once you complaining about every judge or other dancer etc..
It's such a beautiful and special gift to dance, I can't dance at all, but to watch someone who dances from their SOUL is absolutely beautiful.. I've been around quite a few crying, complaining whinging dancers for years, and what a pain they are.. Stop complaining, bung on your dance shoes, and JUST DANCE.

I won't say much, but I agree with the last Anonymous message, about the power of dancing from the soul. There aren't many around Australia (in the Hip Hop scene as far as I know), who really dance from within, with emotion and expression. It's just all moves to some people.

Would you rather watch someone who is good at what they do.. but shows no emotion and enjoyment from it, or someone who is obviously having fun and loving what they are doing...

Anonymous - happy, I agree.

Thanks Trina...
Im just so happy for my 2 friends.. they took a chance to audition and it paid off..

If they run a second series i may be convinced to audition myself..

Good luck to you and all others who audition in Sydney!!
It just shows that dance is a passion and a love and that this will provide all sorts of dancers with exposure and promote dance itself, for dance lovers, what could be better...

all the best
