So You Think You Can Dance in Australia
November 26th 2006 19:30
The second video for today is one from the TV series "So You Think You Can Dance". It's the first time to be shown in Australia and it's like a dance version of Australian (American) Idol. They have some shocking SHOCKING contestants, the same kind who get rejected on Idol getting rejected in similar fashion at these auditions.
It's great that people have strong support systems - family, friends who believe in them and encourage their 'talent' which gives them confidence to not only audition, but base their whole life on a career in which they have no real skill...
I think it was the first round of auditions in NYC for the second lot of the popular Dance idol show, and I was amazed at all the crap shown when some of the world's finest dancers (especially in Hiphop and Funk styles) come from that same place.
One guy in particular, Dave “Sex” Soller was quite amusing to watch, believing that he projected the ideal sexy male while his mother cheered him on. He looked about 40 years old (ok I'm exaggerating) and I felt quite physically ill during his 'performance'. After being shut down by the judges, he refused to talk to the cameras until he had spoken to his mother, who later gave a piece of her mind to the judges and claimed that her son was sexy and has great talent.
Disturbing.
The video isn't available on Youtube due to copyright infringement, but I found the Famous Face Plant which was replayed in slow motion about 10 times throughout the first episode. I can't stand watching those clips of people hurting themselves, it makes me more squirmy than when I watched Saw III or Hostel. Poor guy.
If only I had time to watch this series on a regular basis. It would probably be only worth watching towards the end, with the finalists pulling out their greatest stuff, filtering out all the crap beforehand.
Too bad the Australian version of "So You Think You Can Dance" never made it past the pilot show (or something like that), that would've been interesting but let's be honest - it would have lacked interest.

what's your source for that? i heard the same too but i couldn't confirm it. I'm still under the impression that Aus is deciding whether or not to have the series here. Hope I'm right
I have a feeling ppl are mixing it up with "Australia's Got Talent", which is getting filmed in February March next year.

We're better off having a show like "So You Think You Can Dance" just 'cause there are more talented dancers in this country than talented singers. Don't ya think? Sheesh........can ya even name one Australian Idol who's broken the international market? It's a joke!
I'm not sure why Channel Ten is showing the second series of the American version over the first series. A good buddy of mine from the Bay taped the first series for me and it's like the best dance show I have ever watched. It's off da hook!
I heard the second series is not as good. I know who wins it in this series, but I won't spoil it for you peeps.
Yours truly,

I don't know about more talented dancers than singers in Australia, I would've assumed the other way around?
Hmmm they probably think the first series is way outdated and would rather skip to the second instead. Who knows, it's all about the benjamins.

I am an ex dancer who now works full time for a factory company packing boxes and anyway even though Im now married with 2 kids and heaps overweight, every now and then I still hang out at parties where a lot of dancers hang out at.
Anyway, there was a street media launch for So U think u can dance and they had 3 Australian dancers from the company called '7 Flavours' performing for such and also they peformed professionally at the Channel 10 Xmas party. It was awesome!
So I dont know whether that is a sign that is positive about the show coming to Australia officially. A friend even tried to contact these dancers for 7 Flavours but apparently they are currently on a dance overseas tour.
Anyway, sure that nobody would have heard of them but checked on the net that they also manage the World Salsa Champions and UK based choreographer Supple.

You then get selected to audition in front of the show's judges and filmed. I am in the process of Legal dispute's with channel 10 about broadcasting of my outerself and currently have a collegue looking at the legality of the contract, as some things were quite annoying, and I wont disclose here.
Anyhow on the dance perspective, and I do give this information for the benefit of all dancers who are interested in these processes...(I was going to go home but my friends kept saying just go with it, so I did),
I did a funkstyle based freestyle, with tutting and poppin. They said they liked it but I looked too relaxed and had no energy. I then made the statement "I was sitting in that room for 7 hours waiting", the judge basically said that is no excuse I agreed and said yeh thats life, they will edit all this to their liking of course. In addition they didnt even provide water for the dancers. You had to pay 3 bucks for water, I walked over to the school and found a drink fountain. This of course is no justification on my own part for my dance abilities, as I did stop dancing for a year .. I accept that neither do I care for I am content where I am which I wrote on the form too ( dancing the streets/clubs). I did not realise this show came under the same producers as Idol, shows which I despise, and it is very superficial, it was quite englightening to see how TV works.
After my segment the security guards even shaked my hand, and the audience said quote "f#&$ what those guys said, that was awesome" end quote. However fact is I was voted No by all three judges and incompetent for their show, Im not the type to be dependant on others for happiness, I was not offended. In closing for all critics out there, especially dancers, its easy for you to criticise people sitting where you are but until youve done it and seen what goes on away from the camera, you will know the truth that your words hold no weight. For those who feel I do not have skill, the fact is I was selected that far, which indicated I had skill according to them. Dance is an Artform and all art depends on the eyes of the beholder, some very talented street dancers didnt get as far as I did. Street dancers will always be casted aside usually for the more mainstream entrenched styles, this is not just about judges but about global viewing, which is correct, for the "australias favourite dancer" that comes from the show... . It would actually be better if the global audience/studio audience could vote instead of judges altogether. You may be a qualified mechanic but does that make you a good one? are your clients happy?

That's not true, I don't believe that, it's coming early 2008 I think. Channel Ten does have a sneek peek here:
