Mission: To find the best Salsa
January 3rd 2007 05:15
One of the things my boyfriend promised me the year before last was that we'd take Salsa dance classes together. NEVER HAPPENED.
It's understandable that we were both busy and did at least 4 hiphop dance/bboy competitions each in 2006, but you should make time for Salsa too...
SO I was browsing the Ticketek site and found the 2007 Sydney Latino Festival scheduled for the 25th-28th January at the State Sports Theatre, Olympic Park. They've got all these international dancers coming down and it looks like it'll be a great learning experience for those past beginner level. Damn.
And what's the difference between all the different Salsa styles? I'm confused. Must do some research - and I mean the physical kind, not the electronic means. It's better, healthier and more fun that way.
To start my investigation I shall start by asking my good friend and former dance buddy Thao (of Groovesteps) who is a major Salsa enthusiast. I'll post up what recommendations I receive and try a lesson or two at different studios.
Hmmm a mission! I shall drag my boy and make him swap sneakers for "sensible" shoes to Salsa in. Or Tango. Because it takes two.

How'd you win that?
Well Darrio's busy with the bub and he's only got one or two classes going on, I miss those Commercial Hip Hop days with Darrio three times a week...

This Sydney Salsa competition?
You won't find the best Salsa there ... regardless of how well the contestants dance ...
To find the best Salsa in Australia?
Cafe Salsa at Henley Beach in Adelaide ...
And Salsa of the dancing kind on the beach afterwards ... (no awards ... just re-wards ...
Henlely Beach in Adelaide? Not far from the SAFC (South Australian Film Corporation) offices at Hendon.
Shine? The film by Scott Hicks?
The cafe where Geoffrey Rush gets a standing ovation as the 'nobody' who plays exquisite Rackmaninov?
That's not Cafe Salsa ... *** Sorry to disappoint you ... (that's just around the corner *** (bit of Aussie piss-take coming ...
to the surface ...
there ...
WHOAH! PUSSYCAT.
But the Cafe itself? Where Rush did his Helfgott masterpiece of method-acting? Not serial acting. ***
It's next door to an exquisite wine bar. Bacchus ... (some pagan god I think ... grape juices etc ... I'm just learning about paganism ... )...
The best wine to drink there? Sticky ... botyritis ... from the Barossa Valley ... Golden liquid ... Wolf Blass I think ... Gold something ...
Shine the film? ... Where the title came from?
Pink Floyd's song ...
'Shine on you crazy Diamond ... '
This Salsa Beach Dance? ... Do you take your sensible shoes off or leave them on? Cos I'm mad in them and out of them ... I make Helfgott look sane ... (so I guess I could leave them on ... ??? And just trampoline up and down? ... ***
I'm musically ignorant. I just love music... ***
'Man takes sand from a beach
to turn into glass
so he can look through a window
at the beach?' ... (Very poor paraphrasing of U2).
Bono? God.
Me?
See how there's nothing there?
In words? Me? Nothing.
Like Bruce Springsteen sings in Dead Man Walking ...
Don't forgive my sins
There'll be nothing left of me ... (another very poor paraphrasing) ...
Springsteen? God
Why are there so many gods around?
I had to turn pagan to find out ...
So Hip-Hop Girl ...
Shine on you crazy diamond ...
David ...

I went to this guy's lessons at Belmore in '06 (or was it '05?) and he explained things really well, step by step, and I learnt heaps - had fun too.
Then there's Tuesday at the Establishment Hotel
- I just rang to check - there's a Salsa lesson from 8-9pm, then more dancing. All free. 252 George St, Sydney. I plan to go this Tuesday.
I'll keep my eye on your blog - let us know if you find something.

I've been way too busy to look around, so sorry for that.
Yes I know Wests Ashfield, what's the instructor/organisation's name?
Free salsa! I'm missing out.
Hey Geoff,
Well I think I'm gonna focus on getting back into Hip Hop styles and improving those before I start out another...
