Confessions of a Serial Dancer - by Trina

I pull the hood of my jacket over, half covering my sweaty face; I am exhausted. These are the confessions of a serial dancer.

Awesome 5 year old Bboy (Breakdancer)

This kid is fresh.

He's probably trained hardcore in Shaolin martial arts or for Cirque Du Soleil which would explain those crazy back hand-springs and planches.

Yes, my future babies will learn how to six-step before they learn how to walk

I can't stand people like Ske and Nao (from dance crew Nu Skool Club). They are too damn good and everyone wants to be like them.

Hahaha I love LOVE this clip of the freestyle battles on the day after Shakedown finals. It was crap because we (Caramell) didn't know anything about it, but had to leave Melbourne early in the morning anyway.

Yay for footage!

Prepare to be blown away by the skill, musicality and uber-goodness of these New School Hiphop freaks. Freaks! (Seriously Ske I'm gonna punch you in the face next time I see you).

Catch them at Dancekool Volume 17 showcase!

Krumping vs. Breaking in Sydney

November 2nd 2006 20:44
When Krump first got into the mainstream, establishing itself as another form of Hiphop expression, many looked down upon the emerging style the way technically trained dancers and the general public did on bboys when breaking first came out.

People were quick to compare this new, raw form with other styles that have been around longer, mostly Bboying. There was the misrepresentation in the documentary "Breaking versus Krumping" which set off a lot of bboys hatin' on and rejecting the new 'dance' style.

After much sh*t talking and b*tching, mostly online in forums and blogs, Krumping has become more accepted in mainstream Australia.

Recently, representatives from both sides of Bboying and Krumping in Sydney gathered for a demonstration battle between the two very different styles. It was more for show, for fun and to raise money to send the Bboys to Freestyle Session in Japan, (which is not possible anymore due to lack of funds).

An event like this is just a great way to jam, to meet and mingle with other dancers and hopefully to raise money to support future urban dance events which don't get any funding down here in Oz.

The stress of dance competitions

August 28th 2006 03:31
The kind of dance competitions I'm familiar with are the urban/hip hop types, groups of 4-20 people showcasing a 3-7min routine in front of a large audience and a select panel of 3-7 judges.

Sydney has quite a few of these comps held throughout the year by different organisers but the same rules apply to all of them - be original, creative, entertaining and versatile, apart from all the technical requirements.

Dance crews who enter range from amateurs who practice in their garage/backyard and dance for fun, to the more professional groups where dancing IS their life.

Caramell at Shakedown Sydney Finals, Sydney Uni Sports & Aquatic Centre
Caramell at Shakedown Sydney Finals

This explains why I haven't been posting on this or even on my Hiphop blog for a whole week; every night is a late night rehearsal for hours at a time. Bruises, various injuries, sore muscles are all worth it. Plus, all the exercise makes you sleep even better.

I think entering one or two dance comps a year with a good break in between is a great way level up your dancing skills - it sets a goal with a deadline and makes you train harder and more frequently.

So far this year I've entered 3 dance comps. My group Groovesteps won the first one, came second in the next one, and with Caramell we took out the Shakedown Sydney finals just yesterday and will be heading to Melbourne at the end of October for the national finals. Still waiting on footage.

Caramell at Shakedown Sydney Finals, Sydney Uni Sports & Aquatic Centre
Caramell at Shakedown Sydney Finals

Be cautioned if you're thinking about entering a dance competition like these; it'll mean less of a social life, less contact with your family and loved ones, maybe not a lot of sleep, and worries that you'll screw up majorly and be the ultimate reason why your group didn't do as well as they'd hoped. Prepare yourself for disappointment and always remember that it's about the journey, what you've learnt and how much you've grown during the process, not if you win or don't even place...

Just keep dancing.

The Freestyle Artist

August 15th 2006 22:26
Chux here again, on the art of Freestyle dance.

Freestyling is what any dancer can do, once one becomes so comfortable with the movement of their body, that they can generate movements from the top of their head and perform them on the spot. Some of the more skilled dancers are able to do this without looking repetitive, have the ability to keep their moves sharp and clean, and use the music well, as well as have their moves suit the music. Freestyling can be of any dance form, and it's the essence of dancing: letting the music move you.

Personally, i don't think my freestyling is up to scratch, and i need to work on it a LOT.

See what i mean?

Anyway, Here is one of the freestylers i respect most.
Kevin Brewer, the choreographer of the American hip hop group the Jabbawockeez from San Diego.

Middle School Hiphop - New Jack Swing

August 13th 2006 23:05
I'm trying to avoid posting up random Youtube clips because everybody's doing it now and its getting boring, unless there's a story behind it or something, even better if it involves the poster to personalise it a bit more. I can stick up random videos showing different styles, great routines and stuff but that gets repetitive and boring. So...

I'm posting up a video of the only time I've ever been filmed doing a dance class. A few weeks ago my friend Jasey and I were the only students in Masaki's Hiphop class at Dancekool (Parramatta). Jasey decided he wanted to learn some middle school, a.k.a "New Jack Swing", and while I don't advise anyone to dance at least an hour after they just ate a meal, I ignore this advice and bear the indigestion and painful bowel movements after.

This time though, the music of the New Jack era (think late 80s to mid 90s), of Boyz II Men's "Motownphilly", House of Pain's "Jump Around", Kriss Kross' "Jump" and Bell Biv Devoe's "Poison" as my particular favourites, just taunted me with its highly energetic double-beat counts and big, bouncy moves.

So here is the routine of said dance class, to give an idea of this middle school style.

Masaki teaches Hiphop at Dancekool (Parramatta, City areas), Dance Central, and through D2MG at UNSW.

Why I don't dance for drunk girls

August 7th 2006 23:14
I had posted this in my Hiphop.org.au blog last week and thought I'll post it on here since it's quite relevant.

At my university we have a Hiphop club. It's called D2MG and this year I'm heading it, with a handful of helpers and a lot more work than we can handle. Today we celebrated "Foundation Day", the anniversary of the birth of our fine institution. At this event, like the orientation week at the start of every academic year to welcome the new and welcome back current students, we had a stall set up to recruit members and make a big noise on campus.

Usually when people inquire about our society, we don't get requests to dance for them, as there is someone always on the vinyl, grooving to the music. Today was more quiet, seeing as we had to compete with the blaring Robbie Williams and other Top 40 crap of the main stage only 50 metres away.

2 girls from the college on campus were obviously tipsy (and it wasn't even noon), badgering myself and my boyfriend to dance for them, in exchange for their signatures to our club. After much pestering we both refused and the girls left frustrated, "what's the point of this club if you don't dance when someone asks you to?"

dancing UNSW o week

What are we, monkeys who automatically do what you tell us to, just for your own entertainment? Screw you. For a $5 membership I'm not going to leave my post for the amusement of a few drunk girls. It's not worth it. We don't need your money, and you're signing up for the wrong reasons anyway.

I may sound like a priss to some who don't understand because they've never been in a position where someone says, "oh so you can (insert special talent here), can you do it here/show me?" Especially when they're drunk, you just don't wanna waste your time.

Most of the time I'll oblige, to show that I'm not just all talk; I'll engage in a battle if someone challenges me and hell I'm usually the one creating the battle circles at the clubs.

I don't drink alcohol, only in sangria and truffles. Drunkeness is a turn off (ok sometimes it's quite funny) but most of the time is really annoying. Today especially, laying out our vinyl and taping it to the concrete for our dancers was reported to me as being an Occupational Health and Safety Hazard. Um ok. Apparently because majority of people within the area were expected to be trashed, there was a possibility that they will slip and injure themselves on the vinyl and sue us. I was personally liable being the President of the society so of course I had to roll up the mat.

Sucks.

I think only a handful of people who read this post will know where I'm coming from.

Step Up Movie Channing Tatum Jenna Dewan

Channing Tatum
Mmm... Channing Tatum plays Tyler in 'Step Up'
Ah I keep forgetting to post about this film. Another dance movie. This time, rough and tough breakdancer falls in love with ballerina and they fuse their styles of dance to create a spectacular showcase at the end of the movie.

Hottie with THE bod, Channing Tatum (Coach Carter, She's the Man) plays rebel kid, Tyler and Jenna Dewan (Take The Lead, Tamara, The Grudge 2) takes on the beautiful ballerina role, Nora, who recruits Tyler as her partner for her senior dance showcase. Australia's own Rachel Griffiths makes an appearance in this film as the headmaster of Nora's elite dance school.

Step Up Movie Channing Tatum Jenna Dewan

What makes 'Step Up' stand out from the other movies is in the process - they held auditions through their official site on MySpace.com for dancers to be featured in the movie. Contestants were to send in clips of their skills and the judging panel consisted of Ciara, Channing, Jenna and choreographer Anne Fletcher. 5 winners were selected to be included not only in the movie but also Ciara's new video clip.

Channing is a hottie but rumours are that he's gay, and while watching some of the videos on the MySpace official site, I kinda got that feeling too...

Movie hits theatres on August 11 in the US and on September 28 in Australia.

Channing Tatum
Mmmm...Channing

Here's an exclusive clip from the movie, of Tyler (Channing Tatum) busting some moves

Another clip from the movie, this time both Jenna and Channing doing their thing on the dancefloor, with a classic boys vs. girls dance-off, Mario (Let Me Love You) in the back ad-libbing.

And here's the official trailer:

As posted on my Hiphop.org.au site, there's a new online community called Str33tlevel.com made for Hiphop dancers and any other styles are welcome of course. The idea is to share knowledge, discuss anything dance/hiphop related, a place where Hiphop dancers can go and hang out, like a PCYC type thing online. This came to being after the lack of support from the male dominated Ozhiphop.com and Ozbboy.com, who did a lot of trash talking and told us dancers to stick it and keep out of their forums, while females such as myself were asked to expose our chests.

Phew. So head over to Str33tlevel.com, so you won't have to put up with hearing singers telling dancers how to dance on forums such as Hoopdreamz.com.au, and get to know the rest of your fellow dancers in the Hiphop and extended scene in Australia.

Next Thursday night, August 10, they'll be having a launch party, details below.

Str33tlevel.com launch party!

Nike has started doing Dance commercials.

"I don't need to fill a stadium

I don't need to hear 60,000 people chant my name
I'll never have a fan club

Online instructional videos or or tutorials for dance are highly popular but limited or charge fees. I'm not a fan of these, as I believe in physically going to classes or other training places to learn properly (including being taught by someone who knows what they're talking about otherwise you get the wrong information and are wasting your time and energy).

However once in a while I stumble across random sites that are quite decent compared to the rest of the crap out there; in this instance, it's a "breakdancing" flash tutorial which explains things in some detail and gives tips and advice.

Just a note that the real term for this dance style is "breaking" and some of the moves shown in the tutorial are from popping which is a funk dance style that was included in the umbrella term "breakdancing" along with locking and boogaloo. Breaking (or bboying/bgirling) is more than a dance style - it's a lifestyle, which I've elaborated on in my Hiphop.org.au site.

Lionsgate Films
Only recently has Australia discovered the art form of Krumping, through the release of Dave LaChapelle's documentary, "RIZE".

From the ghettos of LA, Krump dancers emerged after branching off from Clowning, another art form created by Tommy The Clown which is often mixed up with the former.
darriostreet.com
Darrio gets krump

There are correlations between krumping and traditional African tribal dances, as a spiritual, raw and highly energetic form of self-expression; is not aggressive, it is not violent.

In Australia, there are few who can krump and even fewer who can teach it (if at all). There's much speculation about the validity of these teachings and the quality of the dancers; what I see is that Krumping is now a fad, something that a lot of people think they can do easily by pumping their arms and chest really fast and adding booty shaking and stripper dancing to the mix. WRONG.
The best way to learn is by going to krumpkings.com and reading up on it, order the DVDs so you get educated directly by some of the founders. Those who would like to learn in person, the man in Australia to go to is Darrio of darriostreet.com. He is based in Sydney but will be doing Brisbane and Melbourne workshops in the next few months.

To those who consider themselves Krump dancers in Australia, most of you have no idea. What y'all are doing is Krump-inspired dancing, which is cool, but as long as you got your facts straight.

Me getting buck

I used to get buck (which means "to krump"), but now circumstances in my life have changed and I don't feel enough anger and frustration to be able to vent it through krumping, and the whole commercialisation of it all had turned me off.

To check it out, here are some clips of the founders getting buck.
