Am I vain?
September 13th 2007 02:54
Or is it not a question of vanity, but of something else?
I just spent over $1,000 on a series of prepaid beauty treatments including face peels, permanent hair removal and some products.
Does it really matter if my face doesn't have even pigmentation? Is it just a minority of people undertaking these treatments or is it a more general thing these days in a beauty/fashion conscious society?
Massages and manicures weekly, with the odd colonic irrigation every 6 months.
I think this is more of a confession than a rant or regular post. I feel guilty spending ridiculous amounts of money on self-maintenance. Maybe I just want someone to reassure me that it's a normal and positive thing?
I don't spend lots of money on make up, gym memberships and jewellery and don't plan on getting any plastic surgery so maybe I'm not that bad. And are face peels worth the $100 per 30 minutes? Should I remove all my hair down there and stay 8 years old forever, or is that too extreme...
*sigh*
Oh the woes of the modern day female with 101% disposable income and no financial assets or liabilities...

Firstly, I'm not going to answer a rhetorical question from a female who asks, "Am I vain?" That's as dangerous as commeting on the size of a woman's arse.
In terms of not worrying about it? It's your disposable income. If that's what you want to spend it on, you're entitled to do that. It's a conscience issue for the individual. And it's relative to the individual's income and circumstances.
In some ways I find it a bit strange that you'd feel the necessity to spend that much money on body beautiful enhancement (going by your active lifestyle) but then again, I'm not so naive as to think that 'body beautiful perfection beyond reality' is not part of the dance scene. Those cameras put on kilos.
It sounds to me like you don't think you need it, but someone else thinks you do.
Here's my offer. I'll buy two cucumbers and a carton of sour cream from the organic grocer, and give you a complete facial for $800.

p/s...not sure about the odd colonic irrigation though -- have heard/read that it sometimes does more harm than good...

Well I can't say if the colonic irrigation was good or bad - I did it three times over three weeks as recommended but at the same time was eating healthy and dancing everyday for hours at a time.
I think it's the same as continually drinking lots of water everyday (2-3 litres) and doesn't cost as much nor is it as painful. Felt good afterwards though.

PS. I just realised. The Filo Fiesta is just around the corner. Are you performing?

Your mom is right though.
Hmmm I'm very distant from the Filipino community. No, not performing but I will keep you posted!
Thanks for the comment.

Will you take some friendly advice from a 15-year student of the ballet?
Cut back to 50% on the disposable income and put some away to live on/go to school on/retire on?
A dancer's career lifespan is as short as a butterfly's...
.. enjoy it while it's here, but prepare for when it's not.
Just friendly advice from experience; hope I'm not coming off preachy or anything. I don't mean to.

Yes I'm quite good at saving, it's just once in a while I have a financial spew, and it's usually a big mess!
Oh don't worry, my living isn't made from dancing, but from computers so its quite safe.
Definitely not, I welcome your advice
