Confessions of a Serial Dancer - by Trina

I pull the hood of my jacket over, half covering my sweaty face; I am exhausted. These are the confessions of a serial dancer.

With the close of Groove Melbourne’s first chapter tonight, there are no more confirmed dance events on the roster as many of the dancers will be taking a break to prepare for their mid-year exams.

To reflect on the half-year that was, here’s a snapshot of what has happened in the past five months!

FREESTYLE FED SQUARE - 4th February
The year kicked off with a free event at Federation Square. Melbourne saw the new crew ‘Jigsaw Sneakers’ in action for the first time and also witnessed Fresh Sox place something other than first. The crowd also got to see one of our best ‘imports’ from Japan so far, Ryusuke.

Hip Hop Solo Battles

1st Place - Ryusuke (Jigsaw Sneakers)
2nd Place - Jester

Hip Hop Crew Battles
1st Place - Jigsaw Sneakers
2nd Place - Urban Force

Bboy Battles
1st Place - Hybrid Formz (Sydney)
2nd Place - Fresh Sox

Powermove winner - Simon (Subsonic)

THE GAME - 24th February

Australia’s FIRST official Krump Competition was by far one of the most hyped and energetic comps ever held in Australia. Almost the entire Krump scene was present at Melbourne Music Academy to see everyone get BUCK!

GET KRUMP’D - 13th April
This was the first hip hop showcase competition for the year, and there were a few new things in store for Melbourne. K-star was split into an overage and underage crew for the first time. A new crew by the name of ‘The Project’ was formed by some members from Funkey Fresh and other dancers around Melbourne, and Vikings wow-ed us with a new line-up of strong dancers and a great show that many thought should’ve won the competition. A new crew by the name of Nomadic Funk also showcased and features the best poppers in Melbourne.

Overage Division
1st Place - K-star Senior
2nd Place - The Project
3rd Place - Vikings

Junior Division
1st Place - K-star Junior
2nd Place - Baby Bling
3rd Place - Street Funk

RAW ON THE DANCEFLOOR 2007 - 28h April
Vikings hosted their third installment of Raw two weeks after Get Krump’d and played host to Jigsaw Sneaker’s first show in a competition. This event also featured Alpha Delinkwentz debut as a crew, and some members of Virus dancing with The Project. The big surprise for the night was junior crew Street Funk placing third against the overage crews

1st place - Jigsaw Sneakers
2nd place - The Project
3rd place - Street Funk

SHE GOT GAME - 5th May

Australia’s first international B-girl competition was one of the dopest breaking events to ever be held in Melbourne. The scene here was lucky enough to witness some world-class celebrity bgirls including Asia One, Vendetta, A-B-Girl, and JessFX from the USA.

1st Place - Burn Masters (USA)
2nd Place - Domestic Apes (USA)
3rd Place - Vivid Vixens (USA)
4th Place - Point Break (Melbourne)

BATTLESTATE - 12th May

The competition was blown away by another two ‘imports’ from Japan, this time in the bboy competition. Virus crew from Tokyo, Japan have made it clear that they will be a big presence in upcoming bboy competitions in Melbourne. We also saw Bboy Fernando from Air Force Crew (LA) in action.

Bboy Battles
1st Place - Virus (Tokyo, Japan)
2nd Place - Stylenators

Hip Hop Showcases
1st Place - Jigsaw Sneakers
2nd Place - Nomadic Funk
3rd Place - NV-US
4th Place - Alpha Delinkwentz

GROOVE MELBOURNE 1ST HEATS - 13th May

Timed the same day as Mother’s Day, Groove Melbourne was the first competition in 2007 for Beatphonik, who made a big impact on the dance scene last year. They’ve proved they’re still a force to be reckoned with having placed first at every major hip hop dance competition they’ve entered in Melbourne so far.

Overage Division
1st Place - Beatphonik
2nd Place - Tantrumm
3rd Place - NV-US

Junior Division
1st Place - Street Funk
2nd Place - Baby Bling
3rd Place - Katastrafy

WORKSHOPS

There were a large number of international guests flowing into Melbourne with workshops from;
Tovaris Wilson, Asia One, Black Thomas, Michael Schwandt, the Krump Kings, and BShaw (where Chris Brown also made an appearance!)

AUDITIONS

Crew activity was rife this year with a large number of auditions for both casual crews and professional crews. X-Cape, Hi-Voltage, Hollabak, Raw Metal Dance Company, Beatphonik, and CK Dance Innovation all held open auditions. Many other crews also had shifts and swaps with members of varying degrees.

WHAT LIES IN WAIT?

There are a few events we can expect to see in the second half of the year. The second installment of ‘The Game’ is confirmed, as well as a National 3on3 bboy competition that will go off! Raw Sounds and Raw War is also in the works, as is Peninsula Crew Challenge. Groove Melbourne’s second heats are scheduled for September.

The 2007/08 State budget was revealed not so long ago, and of interest to all of us dancers and hip hop enthusiasts was the amount of funding that the Arts would receive.

$63 million was committed by the Bracks government over the next four years to continue its ‘committment to provide arts and cultural opportunities for all Victorians’, as stated by Arts Minister Lynne Kosky. I guess the hip hop culture and and hip hop dancers don’t count as Victorians…

Of the $63 million, only $2.9 million was given to the State’s major performing arts companies. That’s a bit over $700,000 a year to Circus Oz, Malthouse Theatre, Melbourne Theatre Company and The Australian Ballet, to ensure ’sustainable delivery’ of their performances. That’s less than 5% of the entire Arts contribution.

In the meantime, the hip hop community is overlooked again and measly getting used to the idea that there won’t be a ‘Battle of the Year Australia’ again this year, for the 5th year in a row. We’re wondering if we’ll ever send a crew over to Japan or the USA to compete on an international level and put Australia on the map, without the members of that crew having to work an entire year to be able to pay out of their own pocket.

The only funding the Melbourne dance scene has been receiving from Government into events is through the local councils, or the Freeza initiative. Even so, the amount of support we receive from those collectives is minimal and nowhere near enough to run large-scale events similar to what the surf and skate cultures have.

This lack of funding is part of a larger problem in our culture. Namely, the lack of professionalism as a culture, and lack of communication, acknowledgement, and respect from the Government. There needs to be a body set-up to take up the challenge of being the hip hop equivalent of The Australian Ballet Company, or the Melbourne Theatre Company. It’s a long way ahead, but there is no reason why we should be left under-funded, overlooked, and BROKE when we choose to pursue our passions.
