Confessions of a Serial Dancer - by Trina

I pull the hood of my jacket over, half covering my sweaty face; I am exhausted. These are the confessions of a serial dancer.

Reflect on 2006: Get dance-educated

January 30th 2007 02:35
So I wrote this long (but interesting) article for Moob.com under the same style as this blog. It sucks because it's only had 29 views in one month, so I thought I'd do some promotion for it and give the teaser on this blog... you can find the rest on Moob.com > moobMag > then scroll down to the COLUMNS and you'll see my banner: Confessions of a Serial Dancer

Confession #1

Get educated
A fellow dancer and good friend of mine once scolded a spectator's ignorance and dismissed their shallow, 'Google-d' knowledge by informing them: "the urban dance scene in Australia may seem small to you simply because you are not a part of it." Looking in from the outside, it's hard to separate the posers from the real; the passionate dancers to the trick show-ponies; and the trash from the class. It's a common problem in all the various manifestations of the Hip hop culture's foundations as less and less of the new generation are willing to get educated on the truth, the history.

Follow me kiddies, and I'll show you the roots to the tips and all the weed in between. But for now, as the year comes to an end, let's take a look at the latter half of 2006 and the major "urban dance" events in Sydney...

Mission: To find the best Salsa

January 3rd 2007 05:15
One of the things my boyfriend promised me the year before last was that we'd take Salsa dance classes together. NEVER HAPPENED.

It's understandable that we were both busy and did at least 4 hiphop dance/bboy competitions each in 2006, but you should make time for Salsa too...

SO I was browsing the Ticketek site and found the 2007 Sydney Latino Festival scheduled for the 25th-28th January at the State Sports Theatre, Olympic Park. They've got all these international dancers coming down and it looks like it'll be a great learning experience for those past beginner level. Damn.

And what's the difference between all the different Salsa styles? I'm confused. Must do some research - and I mean the physical kind, not the electronic means. It's better, healthier and more fun that way.

To start my investigation I shall start by asking my good friend and former dance buddy Thao (of Groovesteps) who is a major Salsa enthusiast. I'll post up what recommendations I receive and try a lesson or two at different studios.

Hmmm a mission! I shall drag my boy and make him swap sneakers for "sensible" shoes to Salsa in. Or Tango. Because it takes two.

A Dancer’s New Year Resolution

January 2nd 2007 04:40
I don’t really make NYRs because I know I’ll forget them within a month and/or lose the piece of paper I scribbled them on in an attempt to change habits and solidify goals. I believe in improving your life, your situation whenever you feel the need to; just as nice gestures, presents and surprises shouldn’t be reserved only for special occasions like birthdays and Christmas, such applies to resolutions.

You want to lose weight? Look at a lifestyle change and start it right now (ok, tomorrow, BUT that’s the latest you can put it off).

Holidays = eating lots of food - most forms of exercise.

Most.

Start each day fresh, pamper yourself regularly, always look at the bigger picture and laugh more.

Each waking moment is a new beginning.

Ok, ok I promise to blog more frequently and consistently.

It’s James Bond’s year.
