Confessions of a Serial Dancer - by Trina

I pull the hood of my jacket over, half covering my sweaty face; I am exhausted. These are the confessions of a serial dancer.

I don't know what's up with this woman, but in this video she's out dancing on the streets of Shinjuku, when they close it from vehicle access on Sundays. From what I've read about her, she is somewhat skilled and terrifying at the same time. A blogger describes his observations of police intervention that caused her to "burst out in movements resembling the struggle of somebody drowning".

After some research I discover her name is Abe ‘M’ Aria and she performs interpretive dance that has "no technique, no meaning, no concept" all over Tokyo, not just in the streets but at cultural events. She's danced in places like Hungary, Poland and San Fransisco, running dance workshops since 1990. Random.

She has a website so anyone interested in learning from the possessed-like spirit can contact her. I can't read it because it's in Japanese.

Watch her and wonder if you had just wasted those 4 minutes of your life, or if it was an eye-opening experience that somehow made you want to try it yourself.

I knew people would get over Clowning and Krumping as easily as they got over Honestly, what the hell? So Harlem is the birthplace of the "Shake" dance move which was born in 2001, alongside the Crip-Walk. Interestingly, they trace the origins of the "Harlem Shake" back to a drunkard in the early 1980s, who called it the "Albee" at the time. This guy would dance the "Albee" for 50 cents or a drink, and for one dollar he'd teach it to you. Crazy, but the dance move has caught on around the world since then.

Now the latest craze to hit the street of Uprock City is the "Chicken Noodle Soup (with a soda on the side)" dance, along with the song of the same name by DJ Webstar & Young B, currently a club favourite.

It looks ridiculous on anyone doing it, but when you try it (yes I've done my mocking) it's hella fun - stupid fun like when you get hyphy but more bouncy and less headache. I ain't feelin' though, is anybody else?

Here's some kids on 106&Park demonstrating this crazy new trend.

Chris Brown is like a young spokesperson for these dance styles/moves as fads, here he is doing the Chicken Noodle Soup dance, which he doesn't look so bad doing since he styles it up a bit. Check it.

Shakedown Urban Dance Competition Finals

September 12th 2006 13:52

As far as urban/hip hop dance competitions go, in Australia, the Melbourne-based Shakedown (http://kazzum.com.au/) is by far the best one; that is, in terms of crew-style showcases. While they're only really limited to Melbourne, they did have heats in Sydney and are flying both the winner for the under-age and open section down to their state to compete in the finals. They also offer cash prizes up to $3000 for the open age winners, as well as cash for all the runners up, meaning no one walks away empty handed.

That's pretty awesome, compared to other competitions held in Australia.

So the finals will be held at the Vodafone Arena on Saturday, 28th October 2006 and there'll be 22 crews competing. This is the competition that I mentioned in my last few posts, in which my crew Caramell will be representing Sydney.

Here's the video of our 1st place routine for Shakedown 2006 Sydney Finals. Sure it's not so perfect or clean but it'll be a lot better for Melbourne... *cringe at all my stuff ups*

Contact Freestyle

September 4th 2006 03:51
Following on from my previous post about freestyles, I've recently found something called contact freestyle.

The premise is, a bunch of people put together, with only moving at a time, and this movement is passed on to other through coming into contact with the other person, either by pushing, touching, or even miming.

I can't really explain it much more than it says so I'll just show you the clip

Breed - Contact Freestyle "Omarion - Entourage"

Breed - Contact Freestyle "Omarion - Touch"

I'm definitely trying that out at the next jam session I have.
